Counterpart International opened a Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP) office in Yerevan, Armenia at the end of 2001 with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and the United States Embassy in Armenia. Since starting its activities in December 2001, CHAP/Armenia has imported and distributed assistance worth over $4.6 million to vulnerable citizens of Armenia. During the period of February-December 2002, CHAP/Armenia conducted distributions of food, non-food and medical equipment and supplies through different local NGOs and Community Unions, schools and medical institutions in Yerevan, Sisian, Goris, Achapnyak, Aghity, Byureghavan under Armenia Assistance and Armenia School Assistance Projects. Under Armenia Assistance project CHAP has helped its beneficiaries with assistance valued over $1,040,000.00. After sequential activities to identify the most burning needs and statistical information on the target groups, CHAP/Armenia launched distributions through close collaboration and cooperation with the Community Union in Sisian and Goris. Humanitarian assistance in the form of clothing and underwear, footwear and shelters, sleeping bags and medical supplies was donated to the needy people in these two regions of Syunik marz. Acting with special emphasis on improving the conditions in health institutions of Armenia as integral factors for persons’ physical and social well being, Counterpart assisted medical institutions in Yerevan, Goris and Sisian with medical equipment and supplies, donated by US Government. In response to the appeal from heads of regular and special boarding schools concerning lack of school inventory, CHAP/Armenia conducted activities that ultimately resulted in benefit of 103 educational centers catering to over 87,300 children. Having already distributed assistance worth over $221,000.00 under the auspices of its Armenia School Assistance Project, CHAP/Armenia continues distributions of school furniture and equipment, multi-discipline English books and paper, clothing and bed linen, kitchen utensils and food and other supplementary items.
